One question often asked by business owners who are new to the direct marketing world is “should I use direct mail services for my mailshots?”.
And the answer is always the same: “it depends”.
When you first start sending your mailings, it’s always a good idea to test small - certainly no more than 1000 at a time. In fact, even 500 is a big enough test for you to get a feel for how responsive your list is going to be. And in truth, 500 or even 1000 pieces is easy to manage yourself.
Often a good compromise to using a fully-fledged direct mail services company (sometimes called a “fulfilment house”, or “fulfilment company”), is to get your direct mail and envelopes printed locally at a small business support shop (there is one in every high street), and then stuff, stamp, and post them yourself.
Sometimes, though, and certainly once your mailings get over 1000 pieces or so, it’s going to pay you to use professional direct mail services to handle the entire process from end to end. Indeed, some of the better and more service-orientated copywriters and marketers will look after everything for you, from sourcing the list and writing the piece, to overseeing the entire printing and posting operation - direct mail services on steroids! If you find a marketer or copywriter like this, be prepared and willing to pay high fees - it’s worth it because of all the time and hassle it saves you.
Finally, if you use direct mail diligently and consistently, your business will grow to the point where it’s no longer feasible for you to do this yourself, and professional direct mail services are no longer optional. For that reason, it’s perhaps a good idea to start using one while your mailshots are still relatively small, so the direct mail services company you choose can prove themselves without risking a huge failure at your expense!
